The ARA (American Rimfire Association) serves as the sanctioning body for .22 LR benchrest competitions. Competitors in both the Unlimited and Factory classes have 20 minutes to shoot a 25-bull target, with a maximum possible score of 2,500. For official rules, schedule information, and a look at the ARA target, check the Resources section of our website.
A Little History:
The ARA was founded in April 1998 by a group of passionate .22 LR shooters who wanted a premier organization dedicated to competitive .22 LR benchrest shooting. The founders developed the statistical framework on which ARA awards are based, maintained match reports and shooter statistics, and launched both the ARA News and the ARA website to keep participants informed and connected.
In 2010, Dan Killough acquired the ARA with a commitment to honoring the founders' vision — building an honest, competitive organization true to the sport of .22 LR shooting. Among his most impactful contributions was the introduction of an electronic scoring system to scan and score targets, streamlining the scoring process and eliminating bias. Electronic scoring remains optional but is encouraged for all ARA clubs.
In 2017, ELEY INC acquired the ARA and has since continued to promote and grow .22 LR competition across the country. Today, ARA clubs can be found throughout the United States, welcoming anyone with a passion for precision .22 LR benchrest shooting.
